The area’s biggest golf event of the season now has even more of a local flavour.
The Windsor Championship has been rebranded as the BioSteel Championship after BioSteel Sports Inc., which is owned by Windsor’s Dan Crosby, has decided to come on board as the title sponsor.
“We’re excited and thrilled to have them on board,” tournament director Adam Wagner said. “This is a huge step forward for the event and the local economy.”
Set for its fourth year, the tournament event has raised over $250,000 for local charities and has had an estimated $3 million financial impact on the local economy.
Windsor is one of 16 stops on the PGA TOUR Americas, which emerged when the PGA TOUR Canada merged with the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica. The tournament now features events across Canada, the United States and Latin America.
“With the amalgamation of the two (tours), this is going to be a very strong group of players,” Wagner said of the expected field of 156 golfers set to tee things up on Aug. 1 at Ambassador Golf Club.
BioSteele is coming on board as the title sponsor and with a minimum two-year commitment to the event, which will feature a prize purse of $225,000.
“We are thrilled to announce BioSteel as the title sponsor for the BioSteel Championship on PGA Tour Americas,” Crosby, who purchased the company and became CEO in late 2023, said in a release. “The BioSteel Championship embodies excellence, dedication and peak performance – values that align perfectly with BioSteel’s commitment to supporting athletes at every level.”
The four-day tournament on the par-70 Ambassador Golf Club course will see the field cut to the top 60 players and ties after Friday’s second round. That group will advance to the final two days of tournament play. However, several events are planned leading up to the start of the championship.
Monday will see the final eight qualifying spots in the field determined at a qualifier at Roseland Golf Course. Meanwhile, the Don Harrison Junior Pro-Am will be held on that same day at Ambassador.
Tuesday’s is a practice round ahead of Wednesday’s Pro-Am event that leads into Thursday’s opening round, which gets underway at 7:30 a.m.
Two area players have been given a sponsors exemption to play in the tournament with LaSalle’s Thomas DeMarco set to compete for a fourth time while Amherstburg’s Josh DiCarlo, who attends Wayne State University, will also have a spot in the field. The event will also welcome Burlington native Michael Gligic, who is a former PGA Tour player.
Tickets for the event are $10 for a day pass and $20 for a tournament pass with kids 14 and under admitted for free. Tickets for the event are only available for purchase at the gate.
