Developer of 220 Central Park South, home of the priciest residence ever sold in the US, looks to sell his Hamptons retreat

Steve Roth, the CEO and co-founder of Vornado Realty Trust, one of the biggest commercial landlords in New York City — and the developer of 220 Central Park South on Billionaires’ Row — has listed his Hamptons retreat for sale.

Roth and his wife, Broadway producer Daryl Roth, are seeking $19.5 million for the charming compound, Curbed first reported.

Roth is the real estate industry titan behind the Robert A.M. Stern-designed 220 Central Park South on Billionaires’ Row, where in 2019 billionaire hedge fund honcho Ken Griffin spent $239.96 million for a four-story condo, making it the priciest residence ever sold in the US. That’s a record that remains to this day.

Roth has long been known as the figure who carefully curated the building, inviting wealthy residents to buy homes there and even tapping fashion designer Zac Posen — a friend of Roth’s Broadway-world son, Jordan — to design building staff uniforms, as documented in Wall Street Journal reporter Katherine Clarke’s 2023 book, “Billionaires’ Row.” But it was Griffin’s purchase that really made it stand out.

“The deal made 220 Central Park South the darling of Billionaires’ Row and Roth the king of the corridor,” Clarke writes.

The couple purchased the 5,300-square-foot East Hampton residence for a cool $3.5 million in 1994, according to Curbed.

The classic, shingled abode — which is located a block from the ocean and just up the road from the iconic Grey Gardens estate — offers four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a separate guest studio and a pool.

Set on a 1.35-acre lot, the main house offers a variety of spaces to entertain — including a large, fireplace-equipped living room with exposed beams and a peaked roof; a formal dining room; and a sprawling kitchen with an eat-in island and two ovens.

All the bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom, and there is additionally a mirrored home gym and a large roof deck off one of the bedrooms.

On the grounds, there is lush landscaping and lawn galore — as well as the pool, which is surrounded by an open-air paved area and a partially covered bit of al fresco space.

The charming pool house offers further space to lounge by the water, and Georgica Beach is “just moments away,” notes the listing, which is held by James Petrie and Ed Petrie, both of Compass.
