Sorry Nando’s fans, we’ve got some bad news to share with you…
Customers at a number of Nando’s restaurants can no longer order a fan-favourite item, as the Peri-Peri chicken chain has quietly axed it from some menus.
The Great Imitator wrap has been removed from select restaurants in the UK as part of a new trial.
For those who don’t know, the Great Imitator is a plant-based alternative to chicken, made from pea protein. The wrap also features plenty of Peri-Peri, spicy mayonnaise, lettuce, and chilli jam. It’s said to taste so much like the real thing, that even the most die-hard Nando’s fan will struggle to tell the difference.
But alas, the tasty dish is no longer available to all, and somewhat frustratingly the chain hasn’t confirmed how many locations will still be serving it, or whether it will be making a full return to menus everywhere at a later date.
Understandably, vegetarian and vegan customers aren’t too happy with this change, with some saying they are ‘gutted’ and that it’s ‘ruined [their] life’.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) people shared their thoughts, with @AndrewLeeWard claiming the wrap disappearing would lead to a ‘drop in sales’.
He said: ‘@NandosUK you’ve stopped doing the Great Imitator wrap? We eat at Nando’s semi-regularly but for my wife being pescetarian and mindful of protein intake means nothing else on the menu is suitable. (Not everyone likes beans and halloumi is very high in fat).
‘If you see a national drop in sales, this is why, as it only takes one veggie in the group to want to go somewhere else due to poor choice, for the whole group to follow suit.’
While @ellebear_ wrote: ‘FURIOUS with @NandosUK for taking the Great Imitator wrap off the menu here.’
And @onthefloorhs begged Nando’s not to get rid of the wrap, saying: ‘Is the trial to eventually get rid of it? Please don’t.’
Others hailed it the ‘best thing’ on the menu and said Nando’s had ‘ruined [their] life’ by taking it off the menu.
But it’s not all bad news, as it sounds like the chain may have removed it in order to add something new, as a spokesperson for Nando’s told The Sun: ‘We often trial different menus in select restaurants as we develop new products and flavours for our customers.’
They added: ‘You can still find delicious plant-based options on the menu in these trial restaurants.’
How to make the Great Imitator wrap at home:
For those missing the wrap, a food blogger has kindly revealed how to make a version for yourself at home.
@laynasfoodreviews on Instagram had a go at making the Great Imitator as a fakeaway and said it was ‘definitely’ worth trying.
She used Tesco Plant Chef chicken-style pieces and added Nando’s Peri-Peri sauce, some herbs and spices such as cayenne pepper, paprika, black pepper, garlic oil, and salt.
Next up she toasted a wap in a pan on the hob, before loading it up with Nando’s Perimaise, Peri-Peri sauce, sweet chilli jam, and salad, as well the plant-based chicken alternative.
Speaking about the creation, she said: ‘This is definitely the easiest and quickest recreation I’ve made, especially since you can buy all the Nando’s condiments from any supermarket.
‘Although it’ll initially cost you almost double the price to make (£10-£15), you’ll make ten times the number of wraps so easily worth it!
‘It also tasted almost indistinguishable from the real thing, nothing mind-blowing but a comfort meal for sure. Will definitely be making this again for work lunches/simple dinners!’
This comes after McDonald’s axed a giant burger from its menu, as the foodie line-up changed to celebrate the fast food chain’s 50th birthday in the UK.
Thewas a launch that coincided with the Euros 2024 and the beast of a burger featured not one, not two, but (you’ve guessed it) three beef patties, as well as two slices of cheese, grilled onions, mustard, and ketchup inside a glazed sesame seed bun.
As well as the Hat Trick, other items that are no longer available at McDonald’s UK as of today include the Skittles McFlurry, The Galaxy Caramel Mcflurry, Galaxy Chocolate Raspberry Pie, and Mozzarella Bites.
The new 50th birthday menu is now in full swing at McDonald’s restaurants across the country, and customers can get their hands on the Double Big Mac, Double Big Mac with Bacon, Garlic Bread Cheesy Dippers, a Milkybar Raspberry Ripple McFlurry, Munchies Cookie Dough McFlurry, and Birthday Cake Donut.
The Chicken Sharebox remains on the menu, which contains Chicken Selects, Chicken Nuggets and a whole host of dips to choose from. There’s also a Chicken Selects Sharebox option available.
