As if flying wasn’t stressful enough, there’s now something else passengers flying from Heathrow airport need to take into consideration before a holiday.

We’re all guilty of not leaving enough time before a flight to drop our bags and make it through security, meaning there’s often a mad dash through Duty Free to make it to the gate on time.

But if you’re flying from Heathrow this summer, you might want to change your ways and leave a little earlier, as being late could prove a major mistake.

This is because the London airport has just been revealed as the busiest airports in the world, so you should probably expect some hefty queues.

London Heathrow airport had over 79 million passengers pass through it in 2023 — and now it has climbed the ranks from seventh to fourth place in the rankings of the world’s busiest airports.

According to the Airports Council International (ACI), it has now overtaken Denver, Tokyo and Istanbul — and is just 3% down in rankings from Dallas-Fort Worth (3rd place) and 9% behind Dubai (coming in 2nd).

Topping the list of busiest airports in Europe, Heathrow is the only European hub to make the top 10 busiest in the world.

It’s quite an achievement, really… (Or at least that’s one way to look at it.)

Top 10 busiest airports in the world

If you’re passing through one of the following airports, you might want to leave some extra time…

  1. Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, USA
  2. Dubai, UAE
  3. Dallas Fort Worth, USA
  4. London Heathrow, UK
  5. Tokyo, Japan
  6. Denver, USA
  7. Istanbul, Turkey
  8. Los Angeles, USA
  9. Chicago O’Hare, USA
  10. New Delhi, India

In fact, in June, the London airport reported its busiest day on record, with over 268,000 passengers passing through on the last day of the month.

As of the top of the leaderboard? The busiest airport globally remains Atlanta, with more than 100 million passengers in 2023.

However, this is partly down to it being the home of Delta, the world’s biggest airline by revenue.

So, if you have a holiday coming up – particularly if you’re flying from Heathrow – make sure to give yourself more than enough time before your flight.
