The internet is obsessed with ‘Fluffy Coke’ but some say it should be ‘illegal’

‘This feels illegal,’ a TikToker known as @hauskris told viewers as she poured Diet Coke into a glass coated in Marshmallow Fluff.

But she couldn’t resist carrying on with the recipe. She swirled a straw around in the glass before taking a sip, her face forming an expression of surprise as she adjusted to the taste.

‘I’m not a fan of creamy Diet Coke… but that’s actually pretty good.’

The content creator was drinking a concoction that’s been dubbed ‘Fluffy Coke’ online. Yes, it seems it’s time for ‘Crispy Coke’ to step aside, as there’s a new soda trend in town.

The viral drink craze is thought to have been kicked off by Emma Grace (@not.eg) from the US, and her Memama, who shared a wholesome video showing others how to make a ‘Fluffy Soda’.

For those that are curious, the bizarre beverage is made using Marshmallow Fluff, a soda of your choosing (in this case Coca-Cola) and ice.

You start by spreading Marshmallow Fluff around the inside of a glass. Once it’s completely covered you add ice and soda to the cup. Give it a stir, scraping some of the marshmallow from the sides as you go, and then drink up!

Both Emma and Memama rated the drink 10/10 and described it as ‘creamy’, saying they could drink ‘four of these’.

More than 287,000 people liked the video, with 1,744 commenting on it to share their thoughts. Some were quick to recommend trying it with other types of fizzy drink such as Dr Pepper, root beer, Orange Fanta or Diet Coke, while some said they add Marshmallow Fluff to their iced coffee.

A number of other TikTokers have since given the drink a go, with Brinna Ancheta proclaiming it ‘so good’ and urging people to let the drink sit for a while, as this makes it taste more ‘marshmallow-y’.

A foodie at @Food25 was also a fan of the fluffy drink and recommended people have a ‘dirty soda summer’. She claimed a dirty soda involved adding milk and syrup to your fizzy drink, in the same way you would with a coffee.

‘It’s like having a fancy latte but without having an espresso base, and it’s still caffeinated,’ she said.

But not everyone was a fan of ‘Fluffy Coke’ — some people found the idea too sickly sweet, with @Sheeeshney writing: ‘Adding sugar to Coke is CRAZY.’ Similarly @sjayb22 said: ‘I could not drink that I would be sick. I would have a migraine for a week with all that sugar.’

Over on X (formerly Twitter) people also weren’t convinced, with @whoissabrinaxo posting: ‘This Fluffy Coke trend is overrated.’ And @chicvogue added: ‘I love me a Diet Coke, but now people are making it fluffy?? This just ruins the whole point of a DIET Coke…’

The responses to the trend were so mixed that I decided to put the new craze to the test to see if it’s any good. Here’s my verdict on Fluffy Coke…

Anyone who knows me will know that I have a massive sweet tooth, and I’ve never been one to turn down anything with marshmallows, so I was VERY intrigued by this drink.

I used Diet Coke and the last of my Marshmallow Fluff, but it just didn’t work for me. Perhaps I needed to leave the drink to marinate for a while, but my first sip was utterly disappointing. I tasted the soda first, then got a tiny bit of the marshmallow — the two were completely separate flavours.

Despite a lot of stirring, the fluff didn’t combine with the Diet Coke to make a creamy drink like I’d hoped, instead clumps of the stuff just floated on top of the soda. It looked rather gross, especially as the Diet Coke kept frothing up.

The other thing TikTok doesn’t tell you is that it’s pretty hard to drink, as the Fluff keeps getting stuck in a straw. ‘Try it without a straw’ you might be thinking. I did. Without it I could barely taste any marshmallow at all. It’s a bit of a Catch-22.

While I wasn’t a fan of ‘Fluffy Coke’ (clearly I’m a Crispy Coke gal through and through), I did also try the ‘Dirty Soda’ recommendation, adding a splash of milk and some vanilla syrup to a small glass of Diet Coke.

The result was a drink that looked like sewage, but tasted wonderfully sweet.

Putting milk into Coca-Cola might sound like a weird thing to do, but strangely, it works. If you’re a fan of Cream Soda, this could be the drink for you. It was everything I’d hoped ‘Fluffy Coke’ would be.

That said, it was all just a bit of a waste of time. I won’t be bothering to make one again, I’ll just stick with a regular Cream Soda or Vanilla Coke in future, and the only thing you’d catch me adding to these is a splash of amaretto — trust me on that one!
