Zary golf column: Golf Saskatchewan’s seniors to converge on Nipawin’s Evergreen

The three-day Saskatchewan senior golf championship event will run Tuesday to Thursday at the always-lush, tree-lined Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin.

Golf Saskatchewan’s provincial competition calendar continues to heat up with the Saskatchewan senior men’s and women’s championships on deck next week.

The three-day championship event will run Tuesday to Thursday at the always-lush, tree-lined Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin.

The defending champion on the women’s side is Regina’s Kim Walker, who had a three-stroke victory over Saskatoon’s Kathy Ziglo last year at the Prince Albert Cooke Muncipal Golf Course.

Weyburn’s Rick Hallberg is the reigning senior men’s champion. He edged out Saskatoon’s Brad Phelps by four shots a year ago in Prince Albert. Delisle Valley View Golf Club’s Colin Coben and Brent Wotpka of Swift Current’s Elmwood Golf Club finished tied for the super senior age category.

WALLIN CAPTURES SASKATOON OPEN

Tayden Wallin, a PGA of Canada professional at Riverside Country Club, birdied No. 1 at Holiday Park for a playoff win over Saskatoon amateur Connor Scissons to capture the 2024 Saskatoon Open.

The event, presented by SaskGolfer and Concorde Group, featured a field of 30 amateurs and 18 professionals competing for a $7,000 purse.

Wallin and Connor Scissons finished the two-day tournament tied atop the 48-player field after shooting identical scores of 71 at Riverside and 68 at Holiday Park. Making a late charge on Sunday, Scissons made four birdies on the back nine and a crucial nine-foot putt on 18 to secure a spot in the playoff.

As host of the 2024 Canadian Men’s Amateur championship, Riverside Country Club gave the players an ideal opportunity to get a competitive round in before Canadian Am qualifiers.

With thick rough and premium green conditions, Riverside proved to be a great test as only five players broke par on Day One, with Phil Jonas shooting the low round of the day, a two-under par 70. Brad Moser shot the round of the day at Holiday Park, a four-under 67.
