The recipe behind the Mets’ surprising, playoff-contending rotation

The names and numbers within the Mets’ starting rotation don’t scream “wow,” but somehow it has morphed into a respectable unit.

For that, pitching coach Jeremy Hefner is thankful for the relative good health of his starting pitchers since spring training, when Kodai Senga was sidelined due to a shoulder strain.

Luis Severino, Sean Manaea and Jose Quintana have taken the ball consistently, and David Peterson and Christian Scott have filled gaps as needed. Another starter, Trevor Megill, showed early promise, but has since regressed.

Hefner took time during the All-Star break to speak with Post Sports+ about the state of a rotation that has helped keep the Mets in postseason contention as team brass attempts to figure out a bullpen that has been throttled by injuries and underperformance.
