Suspect in fatal southeast Calgary shooting to face a jury trial next April

The suspect in the fatal shooting of a city man at his southeast Calgary resident will face a three-week jury trial beginning next April 28.

Ruttan asked that jury selection take place on April 24.

Mawdsley, 40, was gunned down shortly after 8 a.m. on that date a short distance away from an elementary school.

Douglasdale Elementary is across the street from the entrance to the cul-de-sac where Mawdsley lived.

About an hour after the killing Mounties discovered a burned-out SUV south of the city in Foothills County, which matched a vehicle suspected in the shooting.

Lead defence counsel Noel O’Brien had argued that the case against his client should be dismissed.

At the beginning of the hearing last November, Robertson imposed a publication ban on all the evidence at O’Brien’s request.

Earlier this year an attempted murder charge against Keller was tossed at the conclusion of a separate preliminary inquiry when a judge ruled on March 12 that there was insufficient evidence for him to be sent to trial on that charge and an allegation of recklessly discharging a firearm.

Keller had been accused in connection with an Aug. 2, 2022, shooting in the parkade underneath the Real Canadian Superstore in the city’s East Village district.

Keller remains in custody pending trial.
