Caitlin Clark breaks single-game WNBA assists record in career night for Fever

The summer of Caitlin Clark continued on Wednesday as the WNBA superstar shattered a league record as well as a franchise record in the Fever’s 101-93 loss to the Wings.

Clark recorded a WNBA record 19 assists surpassing the previous record set back in 2020 by then-Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot, which, ironically, had been against the fever.

The record-setting assist came on a dish back Kelsey Mitchell, who knocked down a game-tying 3-pointer with 2:22 left in the game.

Clark finished with 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting and 2-for-9 from 3-point range on a night where she also broke the Fever single-season assist record and reached 400 points and 200 assists in a single season quicker than any other player in league history.

Prior to that, the Previous low to reach that stat had been set by Sue Bird.

The Fever superstar had a number of highlight reel passes over the course of the night, including a behind-the-back dish to NaLyssa Smith and connected with Aliyah Boston

The historic night is sure to bolster her bid to be the WNBA Rookie of the Year this season after being taken No. 1 overall in the draft in April.

The former Iowa star has lived up to the hype that surrounded her since she was drafted and the impressive showing against the Wings only added to her laundry list of accomplishments she’s boasted in her first 26 games as a professional.

Wednesday night marked her third game in the last four in which she’s recorded at least 20 assists and 13 or more assists. It was also the first time in league history that a player has had 20-plus points, 15-plus assists and five-plus rebounds in a single game.

While Indiana lost to the Wings, it does head into the Olympic break having won three of its last five games.

The break comes at a key time to allow for Clark, who has been going non-stop this year going from playing in the national championship game essentially right to the draft and then the WNBA season, to finally get some much-needed rest.

The Fever won’t be in action again until Aug. 16 when they take on the Mercury.

Clark told reporters before the game that she would likely take a week to decompress after playing so much basketball.

“I told [Fever coach Christie Sides], I was like, it’s probably going to feel really weird,” Clark said. “Like I’m probably going to be anxious that I’m not touching a basketball–– but I need to not.”

The Fever are currently sitting in seventh in the WNBA standings after Wednesday night’s loss.
