The 2024 Emmy Award nominations have been announced and smash hit series Shogun leads the pack with 25 nods.
Released on Disney Plus in the UK, the Japanese language historical drama stars cinema legend Hiroyuki Sanada who secured a nomination.
Shogun tells the story of an Englishman, stranded in Japan during the feudal era who becomes embroiled in a battle for power between warlords and samurai.
The popular show, which has been hailed as a ‘masterpiece’, secured an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Series as well as Best Score, Best Stunts, and Best Casting.
Hiroyuki is up for Best Actor while Anna Sawai is nominated for Best Actress for her role as Mariko — just as well given she was left with a gnarly injury on set.
Shogun, which was adapted from a 1975 novel written by James Clavell, actually has a long history with the Emmys.
While this version aired this year, a mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain was released in 1980, becoming the first American TV series to be filmed completely on-location in Japan.
It received multiple nominations and wins at the Golden Globes and, of course, the Emmys where it won Outstanding Limited Series as well as 14 nominations.
While the 2024 Shogun repeated history as it racked up nominations in almost every single category on offer making it a firm frontrunner, it’s not the only show leading the way.
The FX show is competing against the final season of The Crown, 3 Body Problem, and Prime’s Fallout.
Also leading a string of nominations was The Bear, also streaming on Disney Plus, with the most nominations in the Comedy category ever at 23.
The series stars Jeremy Allen White as a young chef from the fine dining world who comes home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop after a heartbreaking death.
He is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series but will be facing off against legends Steve Martin and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building.
The Selena Gomez-led murder mystery show also tops the nomination list with 21 nominations, with the Rare Beauty founder facing off against Ayo Edibiri for the comedy queen crown.
Also up for Best Actor are icons like Idris Elba, Donald Glover, Walton Goggins, Gary Oldman, and Dominic West.
The Best Actress category also sees Jennifer Aniston, Dame Imelda Staunton, and Reese Witherspoon all earn nods.
This means The Morning Show’ co-stars Jennifer and Reese — who play news anchors on the Apple+ drama series — will go head-to-head for the title.
It won’t be until September 15 when stars don their best gowns and find out how will take home the wins at the 76th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards.
