Five people have been injured and dozens told to evacuate their homes after a ‘chemical incident’ in London.

Sixty firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus evacuated a five-storey block of flats in Fulham, west London this morning following reports of a ‘protracted incident’ involving chemicals.

The brigade was called at 12.35am and remained at the scene for six hours.

One man from a first-floor flat in the five-storey building on Landridge Road has been rushed to hospital by London Ambulance Service (LAS) paramedics.

A further four residents were treated at the scene.

Station Commander Graham Crow is at the scene, he said: ‘This is a protracted incident and crews will be remaining on scene for several hours. Motorists are advised to avoid the area to avoid traffic congestion.’

Firefighters carried out a final monitoring sweep of the building and found no elevated readings, allowing residents to return to their properties.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
