Smoke could be seen around Calgary after fire in southeast landfill

Smoke could be seen around Calgary after a large fire broke out at the Shepard landfill in southeast Calgary.

At around 6:50 p.m. on Monday evening Calgary fire received multiple calls about heavy smoke near the Shepard Landfill site.

When firefighters went to the landfill they found a large amount of fire in two soft sided structures as well as a fire within a conveyer machine on the eastern side of the site in the compost plant . The fire department was able to get the blaze under control quickly with the help of 36 firefighters on site.

Crews were able to work with staff onsite to confirm that the buildings were empty.

Fire crews worked alongside crews from the compost plant to isolate and remove burned materials from the structures with heavy equipment.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and fire investigators and plant staff remain on scene.
