Saskatoon police report dozens of arrests in project targeting violent crime

An 11-day sweep saw Saskatoon police charge 61 people with 182 offences.

Saskatoon police have announced the results of an 11-day project meant to respond to violent crime.

Officers from various units were redeployed “in a highly visible capacity” between June 18 and June 29, according to a media release issued Wednesday.

The operation was meant to “respond to in-progress violent crime and conduct priority violent offender management,” the release stated.

Police generated 567 calls for service during the project, resulting in 117 arrests. Some 61 people face a combined total of 182 new charges, and several people were taken into custody on outstanding warrants for charges including assault, weapon and drug offences and breaching court-ordered conditions.

Officers seized 19 bladed weapons, eight guns, seven cans of bear spray and eight “blunt or assorted weapons.” Drugs, ammunition, stolen property and illegal cigarettes were also recovered.

Police urged residents to continue to report all crime and suspicious activity. The Saskatoon Police Service can be reached by phone at 306-975-8300, or by dialling 911 in an emergency.
