Porsche adds two new models to all-electric Macan lineup

A rear-drive-only Macan will be the entry level, while the new Macan 4S will make up to 605 horsepower

  • Porsche is adding an entry-level electric Macan and performance Macan 4S to its midsize electric SUV lineup
  • The entry-level Macan will be rear-drive only, and focus on efficiency and range
  • The Macan 4S will slot below the top-trim Turbo, and offer up to 605 horsepower

The entry-level Macan will start at $94,900. The lineup continues from there with the existing Macan 4, currently on sale starting at $99,300. The Macan 4S will slot above that, starting at $106,900; while the 630-horsepower Macan Turbo – which, being electric, doesn’t actually have a turbocharger, despite Porsche’s tradition of using that name for high-performance trims – tops the four-vehicle lineup at $125,000.

The entry Macan is the model’s first variant with rear-wheel-drive (RWD). Porsche said this trim will focus on efficiency and range, although it hasn’t yet revealed exactly how far it’ll go on a charge. The current Macan 4 is rated for 624 kilometres (388 miles) and stepping on the scale, this new base Macan undercuts it by 110 kg (220 lbs).

It uses a 100-kWh battery and the same rear-axle motor as in the Macan 4, and when used with the vehicle’s overboost launch control, makes up to 355 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) happens in 5.7 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 220 km/h (136 mph). By comparison, the Macan 4 makes the same sprint in 5.2 seconds.

The new Macan 4S has an equally new motor on its rear axle, along with the front-axle unit found on the Macan 4 and Turbo. The combined motors make 442 horsepower, but there’s also a short overboost click up to 509 horsepower; and then with launch control, it goes to 605 ponies. Full stop to 100 km/h takes 4.1 seconds, and top speed is 240 km/h (149 mph).

As with the 4 and Turbo, the 4S uses an electronically controlled all-wheel system that distributes power to the front or rear axles that, according to Porsche, happens some five times faster than with a conventional AWD system. The 4S will come standard with electronic damping, and will have an adaptive air suspension, torque vectoring system, and rear-axle steering.

As with the other two models, the Macan and Macan 4S will have 800-volt architecture with DC charging capacity of up to 270 kW; and, if you can find an appropriate charger, the battery can go from 10% to 80% charge in 21 minutes.

The displays in the Macan – including a 12.6-inch curved instrument cluster and 10.9-inch passenger screen – have also been updated with a new welcoming animation, and a themes application that can match the background display colours and ambient lighting to the vehicle’s exterior shade.
