Ball hockey

A trio of ball hockey players from Saskatchewan helped Canada claim the gold medal at the 2024 International Street & Ball Hockey Federation’s Men’s World Championship in Switzerland.

In the championship game, Saskatoon’s Josh Anderson scored in double overtime to give Canada the 3-2 over Czechia in the final.

Regina’s Josh Laframboise and Saskatoon’s Christian Magnus, a former University of Regina Cougar, also played a big role in the win, as the duo combined for 13 points in the tournament. Saskatchewan’s Brock Harrison was also an assistant coach on the squad.

Meanwhile, two Saskatchewan products also helped Canada win gold at the U18 World Junior Ball Hockey Championships.

Trey Markus and Austin Pacik were part of the Canadian squad that triumphed over the United States to claim the title.

Football Canada Cup

For the second straight year, Regina hosted the Football Canada Cup, which features the top U18 players from across Canada.

And for the first time in 10 years, Ontario claimed the title as they beat Quebec 45-7 at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Team Saskatchewan lost 35-0 to Alberta in the bronze medal game. Saskatchewan previously fell 32-7 to Ontario in the semifinal while Quebec narrowly got by Alberta 12-11 in the other semifinal.

Regina Red Sox

The Regina Red Sox continue to lead the way in the Western Canadian Baseball League’s East Division.

Regina picked up three wins but also dropped a pair of games last week to bump their record to 26-13, which is two games up on the second-place Medicine Hat Mavericks and five up on the third-place Moose Jaw Miller Express.

The Red Sox are now set to visit Moose Jaw on Tuesday before traveling to Swift Current for games on Wednesday and Friday. Regina will be home to Medicine Hat on Thursday at Currie Field.

The league will then take a one-day break as the 2024 WCBL All-Star game will be played on Saturday in Okotoks, Alta.

Howe signs with Penguins

Howe, a Prince Albert product, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the club, which drafted him in the second round, 46th overall on June 29.

The 18-year-old is eligible to return to Regina for the 2024-25 WHL season if he doesn’t crack the Penguins’ lineup.
