The Banff International String Quartet Competition will return for its 15th time in 2025 with an internationally celebrated jury and a newly commissioned piece by Canadian composer Kati Agócs.

“We are thrilled to share this announcement of rules, repertoire, and jury,” says Barry Shiffman, director of the competition which runs every three years. “In just over a year Banff will again become the focus of the music world as 10 extraordinary ensembles perform before our passionate audience and prestigious jury, in a festival-like celebration of music and opportunity…. If you are a music lover who enjoys community and beauty of place, save the dates and join us for a week unlike any other.”

The competition will be from Aug. 25 to 31, 2025 at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

In between competition years, the Banff Centre hosts a string quartet festival and this year’s event, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, will showcase renowned Canadian violinist James Ehnes.

Sought after on the international stage, Ehnes formed the Ehnes Quartet to delve deeper into the power of chamber music. Audiences at BISQFest 2024 will have the opportunity to witness a performance from Ehnes and the Ehnes Quartet live on opening night. In addition, Ehnes is set to conduct a 75-minute masterclass for three young violinists in the orchestra, offering a unique opportunity for emerging talents to learn from a master.
