Donald Trump shot at a political rally in the US

Good morning, welcome to Metro’s live blog.

Donald Trump has spoken out after he was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania.

The former US President, 78, was seen grabbing his ear after the sound of shots rang out, with images showing blood dripping from his right ear and down his cheek.

The crowd screamed out in terror as he ducked down behind the podium and members of the secret service rushed to surround him.

He later emerged with blood on his shirt and raised his fist in defiance before being escorted off stage by security.

One person was shot dead while two others were left with severe injuries, secret service officials said.

The FBI and Secret Service are investigating it as an attempted assassination.

In a post in Truth Social, Trump said: ‘I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania.

‘Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured. It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country.

‘Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.

‘I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!’
