Douglas, like fellow actor Clooney, ‘deeply concerned’ about Biden’s chances

‘It’s difficult because the Democrats have a big bench’

Michael Douglas is sounding the alarm over Joe Biden’s chances against Donald Trump at the ballot box this November after the president flopped spectacularly in a televised debate last month.

The Oscar winner said he was “deeply, deeply concerned” about Biden seeking a second term following a lacklustre performance against Trump last month. Appearing on The View this week, Douglas, 79, was asked about fellow actor George Clooney’s guest column in the New York Times in which he begged the president to step aside.

“I think it’s a valid point. I’m deeply, deeply concerned. I mean, especially it’s difficult because the Democrats have a big bench, they’ve got a lot of heavy hitters, a lot of talent. And I do worry because with the debate … I mean, it was relatively simple: First of all, they should have just told the president to stand up, put a little makeup on for the debate and then where to look and just don’t deal with all of your facts – just deal with (Trump’s) lies.”

Douglas called the election “crucial” and said that he’s not worried about Biden’s age now, but wonders how he’ll perform a year from now.

“Fifty years of public service, a wonderful guy and this just happens to be one of these elections that’s just so crucial. I don’t necessarily worry about today or tomorrow, but a year down the line I worry. I am concerned,” he said.

The View co-host Joy Behar suggested that Biden should have focused on Trump’s lies during the debate. But her colleague Whoopi Goldberg said that would have been a tactical error.

“You know, you can’t win in this game. I really feel bad for him. If he can’t do the job and we see he can’t do the job, then he’s gotta go, but until I can see that, I’m going to support him,” she said.

I love Joe Biden. As a senator. As a vice-president and as president. I consider him a friend and I believe in him. Believe in his character. Believe in his morals. In the last four years, he’s won many of the battles he’s faced,” Clooney wrote.

But the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time. None of us can.”
