Heavy rain closes parts of Montreal-area highways, including Décarie Expressway

Heavy rain in a short period has led to water accumulation, making driving difficult.

A deluge of heavy rain forced the closure of several highways in the Montreal area on Wednesday afternoon.

They include:

  • Highway 15 north (Décarie Expressway) between Côte-St-Luc Rd. and Highway 40.
  • Highway 13 north between Hickmore St. and Highway 520.
  • The ramp from Highway 15 south to Highway 40 east in the Laurentian Interchange.

Traffic camera footage showed many vehicles still stuck on the northbound Décarie, while traffic was being routed off the highway at Côte-St-Luc Rd. The highway was deserted southbound. The transport ministry announced it had reopened at 3:30 p.m.

The Sûreté du Québec is warning that water accumulation is making driving difficult on highways.

The heavy rain across southern Quebec and eastern Ontario comes as the remnants of tropical storm Beryl enter the region. The former hurricane, now a post-tropical storm, was expected to bring 40-80 mm of rain, prompting Environment Canada to issue a rainfall warning.

More details to come.
