“The human spirit and stories of our shared experience comes from a kaleidoscopic cross-section of diversity,” says the release. “RIFFA is proud to play a part in celebrating that diversity as we work together to amplify their voices.”

This year’s programming includes the first-ever RIFFA Academy Gala (Aug. 22, RCMP Heritage Centre), a networking event that raises funds for RIFFA Academy — the educational arm of the festival.

There’s also the free RIFFA Outdoor Series (Aug. 21 at Norseman Park and Aug. 23 at Horizon Station Park) as well as virtual screenings (Aug. 25-30) available on-demand from the comfort of your own home.

On Tuesday, RIFFA also unveiled the Virtual Gateway Program in partnership with the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre (WRC). The program’s virtual reality technology is designed to enhance the lives of individuals in wheelchairs by offering opportunities to experience the world beyond their physical constraints.

RIFFA completed a one-year pilot project at the WRC, which included over 300 participants. The program focuses on three key elements: 1. Reinforcing rehabilitation through tailored VR experiences that provide tools and motivation toward reaching physical objectives; 2. Cultivating community through an emphasis on shared experiences and support; 3. Encouraging empathy and understanding through the exploration of diverse virtual environments that present different cultures, lifestyles, and challenges faced by people around the world.

“The expertise and tireless work of the recreation department at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre has been key to the initiative’s success,” Thimothy said in a release.

The program is looking to expand to additional participants and other rehabilitation centres. According to RIFFA, there are also plans to collaborate with researchers in order to continue studying the effects of virtual reality in rehabilitation and beyond.
