Granby Zoo remains open despite strike

The union stressed that the strike would have no negative impact on the welfare of the zoo’s animal population.

The striking workers are members of the CSN-affiliated Fédération du commerce and have voted for a mandate of 10 strike days to be used at an opportune moment. The employees who walked off the job Tuesday are office personnel, animal-care technicians, guides, carpenters and others.

In a statement, the union said it decided to launch its strike because negotiations have not significantly progressed.

Last week, the union said that just 10 per cent of non-monetary issues had been settled, while the issue of salaries had yet to be discussed. The workers have been without a contract since Dec. 31.

Sticking points in the contract talks include the issues of seasonal employment and access to jobs based on employee seniority. The union stressed that the strike would have no negative impact on animal health.

Granby Zoo management said its zoo and water park would remain open despite the strike, as would its boutiques and restaurants. It said it respects the striking employees’ right to “express their concerns” and would work quickly to come to a contract agreement agreeable for all parties.
