Four men charged in ‘extensive’ kidnapping investigation

Three of the four arrests were made in other jurisdictions, reaching as far as Ontario

Four men face several charges in relation to a 2023 kidnapping following an investigation that spanned 11 months, police announced Tuesday.

On July 4 last year, police received a call from a man who reported his family member had been abducted from an unknown location.

The man’s residence, located in the 500 block of 4 Avenue N.E., was also broken into by three unknown offenders “who physically assaulted him with a weapon and robbed him, before fleeing the area.”

Abductors contacted the man via phone and demanded an undisclosed ransom for the return of his family member, police say.

“Through initial investigations, officers believed the incident to be drug-related and that several individuals were responsible for the kidnapping and were holding the victim hostage at an unknown location.”

The abductors also sent video updates to the family, continuing to ask for ransom.

On the evening of July 5, 2023, abductors released the victim, who was later located by police downtown with minor injuries.

Police initially arrested one man in connection to the incident, before the 11-month investigation began.

Through “44 judicial authorizations, several search warrants, production orders and the seizure of 29 electronic devices” police identified three more suspects believed to be responsible for the kidnapping and home invasion.

Salah Aden, 24, Mustafa Saeed, 23, Brandon Power, 22, and Mohit Sandhu, 22, are all facing several charges in relation to the incident.

Three of the four arrests were made in other jurisdictions, reaching as far as Ontario.

“Our officers continued to work towards locating these suspects, despite their efforts to leave Calgary and evade police,” said CPS Inspector Shanon Scott. “We will continue to investigate this type of criminal activity even if it requires our officers to travel out-of-province to take suspects into custody.”
