Cavalry gets Aird support in topping host Valour

Cavalry FC got an emotional goal from Fraser Aird on Sunday in Winnipeg to defeat host Valour FC 1-0 in Canadian Premier League soccer action.

Aird’s kick wired from inside the right-side of the penalty area in the 34th minute prompted him to reflect on the sudden passing of Dylon Powley, a onetime goalkeeper for Calgary Foothills FC and the CPL’s FC Edmonton and Atlético Ottawa.

“Everyone that knows me knows it’s been a really tough week with the passing of one of my best friends, and I want to say, ‘That goal goes out to all the Powley family,’” Aird told OneSoccer post-game. “That goal was for you, Dylon.”

The win was the first on the road for Cavalry in the 2024 CPL season, and it sees them rise to 17 points with a 3W-8D-2L record to sit just one point out of a playoff position.

Cavalry plays second-spot York United FC (6-2-5) on Saturday at ATCO Field (2 p.m., OneSoccer, OneSoccer.ca).
