Caitlin Clark back in front of rookie of the year race after triple double

Indiana star all smiles after becoming first rookie to accomplish the feat.

Caitlin Clark is back in front in the WNBA’s rookie of the year race.

The Indiana Fever superstar recored the first triple-double by a WNBA rookie ever on Saturday, when the Fever upset league-leading New York LIberty at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Clark had 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds in the 83-78 win. Angel Reese is the other contender for the award.

“Fun was had with the girls,” Clark posted on Instagram, along with some photos of her celebrating after the game and playing in the game.

The 22-year-old also posted a shot with teammate Katie Lou Samuelson on the court and a photo of her autographing jerseys, basketballs, posters and signs while talking to fans.

Clark had fallen one rebound short of a triple-double in an 88-82 win over the Phoenix Mercury last Sunday.

“Obviously, it’s really cool,” Clark told reporters Saturday. “My teammates have been finishing the ball really, really at a high rate. My assist numbers, that’s because of them.”

Indiana started 2-9, but is now in the hunt for a playoff position after going 7-4 to rank third in the Eastern Conference and seventh in the league.

“Caitlin with a triple-double, my gosh, that’s incredible,” Fever coach Christie Side said following the latest win. “Holding New York to 16 points in the fourth quarter, that’s huge for us. That’s the No. 1 team in the league.”
