Rosenfeldt is charged with the second-degree murder of Brown, who was found in a home in the 100 block of Avenue P South on Nov. 15, 2022.
A man accused in the death of his 20-year-old girlfriend, whose body was discovered in an apartment suite in Saskatoon’s King George neighbourhood in 2022, has been committed to stand trial at Court of King’s Bench.
Last week, the Crown and defence agreed to waive Andrew Steven Rosenfeldt’s preliminary hearing, sending the case directly to the trial stage.
Rosenfeldt was 25 years old at the time of his arrest, police said.
People charged with serious offences like murder are entitled to a preliminary hearing at the provincial court level to determine if there is sufficient evidence to run a trial. In some cases, lawyers agree to waive that right.
Brown had a young son and left behind “a huge family that loved her deeply,” according to a GoFundMe page created to honour her life.
Balon said at the time of her death, Brown was preparing to go a detox program in Moose Jaw. She said they were previously told she couldn’t be admitted to the Dube Centre in Saskatoon because of her substance use, and that there was a waiting list for the detox unit at the time.
Brown was eventually readmitted to the Dube Centre after a suicide attempt and was hospitalized for a few days in August 2022. Balon said she warned the staff that Brown was trying to leave her boyfriend, but a psychiatrist told her that he visited her daughter every day and would make sure she went to her appointments.
Rosenfeldt remains in custody pending his trial. A trial date has not yet been chosen.
