Vancouver police investigate Drake-related rap brawl captured on video

An ugly fight between rapper Rick Ross and crew and pro-Drake fans at Plaza of Nations left one man knocked out

The Vancouver Police Department is investigating a brawl that occurred Saturday night at the Plaza of Nations between rapper Rick Ross and his entourage, and pro-Drake fans angry about a song being played.

The fight was captured on video by several people who shared it online, drawing a reaction from Drake and putting Vancouver in a bad light. The videos show Ross being struck in the face by a punch that started it all, an ensuing struggle that ended with Ross’s minder on his knees taking fists and feet to the head, and a member of Ross’ entourage carried back into a secure area after being knocked out.

“We have been made aware of the video that is circulating and we are looking into the matter,” said Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Const. Tania Vistintin on Wednesday.

The ugly incident occurred on June 29 around 10:30 p.m. as Ross was walking through the crowd following his Ignite Music Festival performance.

In the background, Ross’ DJ was playing the recently released song Not Like Us, performed by Kendrick Lamar as a “diss song” against Canadian rapper Drake.

Video shows Ross being confronted by another man, who appears to throw a punch that connects with Ross.

Ross’ bodyguard grabs at a man to his left and they stagger forward, while others punch at the bodyguard who falls to his knees, covering his face.

At this point two men punch him in the head while another kicks at him. The bodyguard regroups, with Ross having gone behind the security fence.

A second melee erupts that ends with a man knocked out. He is picked up by security guards and taken behind the fence.

During the incident there are ongoing racial taunts and comments made about the DJ’s choice of song.

Not Like Us was released on May 4 and takes direct aim at Drake.

On Sunday morning, Ross posted a photo of himself in front of his private aircraft stating “Vancouver it was fun, till next time.”

Visintin said there were no reports made to the police about Saturday night’s incident and it’s not known whether any charges could result from the police investigation.

“Each case is different, so unfortunately, I can’t speak in hypothetical terms,” Visintin said.

A security guard was shot and seriously injured outside Drake’s Toronto mansion on May 7.
