The Canada Revenue Agency posted and then deleted a series of tweets related to the Despicable Me franchise, a popular animated film series, on Thursday morning.
The fourth instalment in the film series, Despicable Me 4, was released earlier this week and it appears someone at the CRA is a big fan.
“Bello bananaaaa! Bapple choppa mooka-laka ooh-na-na!” the office account posted on X on Thursday morning, adding the hashtags #CdnTax #DespicableMe4 and a GIF of a Minion.
The account later followed up on the post, writing: “Oops, the minions were at it again! What they meant was: The kids wearing you out? At least applying for the #CanadaChildBenefit is easy — AND you can do it one-handed on your phone.”
The posts were met with bewilderment and deleted a few hours later, but not before a number of politicians, including Pierre Poilievre, responded.
“No. You are not hallucinating,” wrote Poilievre, while quoting the initial tweet.
“This is the kind of wacko stuff Trudeau’s tax department is busy posting to make you forget they are taking more of your money than ever before,” he added, before sharing a link to sign up for a petition to join the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) in opposition to Liberal tax hikes.
Michelle Rempel Garner, Conservative MP for Calgary Nose Hill, also weighed in.
“It’s extremely hard to reach your agency for help. Canadians are being taxed up the wazoo while their cost of living spirals out of control. Can’t wait to see the comms approvals chain on this one,” she posted.
Rempel Garner then responded a second time, adding “Also y’all’s better not have spent any tax dollars licensing that GIF.”
Rempel Garner also shared a screenshot of the since deleted post, writing: “The message of the day from the federal government agency that takes your tax dollars.”
The CRA posted again a few hours later, writing “Most #CdnBusinesses must pay their GST/HST when they file their GST/HST returns. Learn more about deadlines and how to make your payments: https://ow.ly/h2yi50SrXq9 #CdnTax”
Despite that post aligning more with their usual content, people quickly brought up the deleted posts and responded with screenshots of the deleted tweets.
“People don’t forget,” responded one poster.
