Hennessey Mammoth 400 gives Ram 1500’s V8 a fond farewell

While the trucks celebrate the dearly departed engine, they’ll offer performance handling rather than massive horsepower

  • Performance company Hennessey is turning the Ram 1500 into the Mammoth 400
  • Only 250 copies of the customized trucks will be available globally
  • While the truck sends off Ram’s Hemi V8, the upgrades seem to focus on looks and handling

Only 250 will be built in 2024, but they’re for global sales — meaning someone might end up driving one up here in the Great White North. Pricing and full specs haven’t been revealed, but Hennessey will cover the trucks under its three-year 36,000-mile (57,936-km) warranty.

Ram has announced it’s pulling the 5.7L Hemi V8 out from between the 1500’s frame rails, and is replacing it with a turbocharged inline-six that will make either 420 or 540 horsepower, depending on whether you get the plain-vanilla or the high-output version. That outgoing V8 made 395 horsepower, and judging by the 400 in the Mammoth’s name, it doesn’t sound like this version is going to get a massive jolt of power.

Instead, it looks like it’s going to be all about how it handles. Hennessey is partnering with Fox Factory on the truck, and it’ll have a Fox/Ridetech suspension to bring it closer to the asphalt. That V8 will make its presence known through a Borla performance exhaust finished with carbon-fibre tips.

As with all of Hennessey’s custom vehicles, the Ram will be treated to body add-ons including a deep front bumper, rear sport bumper, carbon-fibre splitter, and side skirts. Buyers will have the choice of their 22-inch wheels in satin black or gloss black tint. That’s likely not all Hennessey is doing to the Ram, but for now, that’s all we know.

Each of the 250 trucks will have a numbered engine plaque and Hennessey badging, but they’ll be sold exclusively through authorized Ram dealers. If you want a last kick at the Ram V8 and want it styled so everybody knows what you have, you better hurry and place your order for one.
