Police have shot dead an XL bully dog that attacked and injured a woman.

Officers with the Greater Manchester Police were called to Gladstone Road in Eccles near Salford at around 9pm on Friday night.

It followed after multiple reports of a dog behaving dangerously.

Members of the public also said the animal had attempted to attack several people.

The force said specialised officers had been dispatched to the scene but were otherwise unable to bring the XL bully dog back under control.

As a result, the animal was killed ‘as the last possible option.’

Reports indicate a woman was injured during the attack.

‘Initially, both local officers and the public were unable to regain control of the dog.

‘Specialised officers were deployed and tried to safely secure the XL bully but were unsuccessful.

‘This meant unfortunately due to the risk and harm it was causing as a banned breed it was destroyed at the scene as the last possible option.’

The spokesperson added: ‘We understand the concern this incident will raise within the community but our officers have a duty to act in challenging situations on a regular basis with the aim of keeping everyone safe.’

The force has said enquiries as to who owned the dog remain ongoing.
