2025 Polestar 4 has quirks but also high quality | Reviews

Slotting in between the bigger 3 and the smaller 2, all-new EV places a premium on design and performance

As much as there is plenty to praise about the all-new 2025 Polestar 4, it is something that isn’t there that makes this all-electric five-door stand out from the crowded EV crowd. That would be a rear window.

But there’s a problem, or at least there was for me during the global first drive event of the Polestar 4 in Madrid, Spain. Getting in the driver’s seat for the first time, the view using the rear-view screen was very clear and crisp, and as advertised provided a wide view of what’s behind you. Impressive.

But once we got on the road through Madrid and heading north to the countryside, I found quick glances in the rearview a touch disorienting. It would take a couple of seconds for my eyes to adjust to the screen, meaning less time for my eyes on the road ahead. I’d encountered a similar experience using a Cadillac rearview camera set-up a few years ago but solved that by simply flipping it down to replace it with an old-fashioned mirror. Not an option with the Polestar 4 as there is no rear window, so I just had to live with it for the day. I did survey a few journalists that night at dinner and found a few had the same issue as me but most did not. I thought it might have to do with corrective lenses but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Just underscores the importance of getting a chance to test drive a vehicle before buying it. If it works for you, it’s a great feature, and one more even impressive in rainy and dark conditions.

What is the 2025 Polestar 4?

Is the 2025 Polestar 4 two-wheel or all-wheel drive?

When it arrives in Canada later this year (or perhaps early next year, see below for more on that), the Polestar 4 will be available in two long-range models: a single motor, rear-wheel drive version and a double motor, all-wheel drive version.

How fast is the 2025 Polestar 4?

It depends on which version you’re in. The single-motor, with a 272-horsepower rating runs the zero to 100 km/h sprint at around seven seconds, while the 544-hp double-motor does it in just under four seconds. That makes the dual-motor 4 the fastest Polestar model ever produced.

What is the best thing about the 2025 Polestar 4?

It might disappoint all those Polestar engineers who burned the midnight oil packing performance attributes into the 4, but after spending a day behind the wheel of both models, what impressed me the most was the display screen. Yes, I know. Oriented horizontally as opposed to the Polestar 3’s vertical positioning, the 15.4-inch display is powered by Android Automotive OS (read: Google) and the excellent Snapdragon Cockpit Platform. That tells you it is fast, reliable and efficient, but the real masterstroke here is the screen’s set up. It is split down the middle into, essentially, two vertical screens, which you can customize. For instance, navigation map on one side and then between two and four ‘widgets’ on the other. These are large and coloured buttons that you can select from a submenu. So, the things you use the most. I selected radio, climate, car settings and regen braking. It’s a great system in that it is easy to see and use, meaning less time for your eyes on the screen and more on the road. None of this submenu scrolling nonsense. Another cool feature is the planet lighting app, which presents each of our solar system’s planets as a light selection for the cabin’s ambient lighting
