Andrew Basha

Position: Left wing

Height: 5-foot-11

Weight: 175 lbs.

Team: Medicine Hat Tigers

What’s his story: Basha is a Calgarian, which is exciting in-and-of itself, but there’s a lot more to make Flames fans happy about this pick than his local connection. Basha is described as a speedy winger with great playmaking skills and he scored 30 goals and added 55 assists for the Tigers this season. He’s quick on his feet and has great vision, which allows him to create opportunities for teammates. By all accounts, he doesn’t let his size get in his way when it comes to driving the net, either.

Second round, No. 62

Jacob Battaglia

Position: Right wing

Height: 6-foot-1

Weight: 196 lbs.

Team: Kingston Frontenacs

What’s his story: After being promoted to the Frontenacs’ top-line early in his sophomore season, Battaglia thrived in 2023-24. His scoring touch was on full-display as he scored 31 goals and added 34 assists in 67 games. Scouting reports note that while he’s not the fastest skater in the world, he’s got elite puck-skills and has the strength and power to fight through opposing checks. His shot is exceptional and he finds open spaces on the ice in the offensive end. He’s the son of longtime NHLer Bates Battaglia, too, so he’s got someone to lean on as he adjusts to the NHL game.

Round 2, No. 74

Henry Mews

Position: Defence

Height: 6-foot-0

Weight: 181 lbs.

Team: Ottawa 67’s

What’s his story: Mews was a lot higher on most draft boards at the beginning of the year and saw his stock fall as the season carried on, but there’s a lot of upside here. The consistent knock on Mews has been the defensive side of his game and he’ll need to continue working on that, but scouts raved about his vision and passing in the offensive zone. He scored 15 goals and added 46 assists while posting a +16 in the 2023-24 season with the 67’s and has real potential on the power-play. With Zayne Parekh and Hunter Brzustewicz already in the system, the Flames now have a solid stable of puck-moving, offensive-minded defencemen on the come-up
