Canada Day in Saskatoon: Fireworks, festivities and more

With Canada Day fast approaching, Canadian fire chiefs — including in Saskatoon — are reminding the public about the safe use of fireworks.

Chief of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs Ken McMullen says people should remember that fireworks are still explosives and are dangerous when the conditions are hot and dry.

McMullen also says in a statement more than 700 fire departments nationwide respond to at least one call due to mishandling publicly available fireworks.

The Saskatoon Fire Department in a release reminded residents that on Canada Day, low-hazard fireworks can only be discharged on private property between the hours of dusk and 11 p.m. Low-hazard fireworks are designed for public recreational use, travel less than 160 feet high and include items such as roman candles, sparklers, fountains, wheels, volcanoes, mines and snakes.

The Canada Day fireworks show in the city is set to begin at 10:30 p.m.

Fired from the Broadway Bridge, the City of Saskatoon noted the best viewing spots of the show are the Traffic Bridge, River Landing, Rotary Park, and hotels, parks and sidewalks in the area.

To accommodate the Canada Day celebrations, lane restrictions and no-parking signs will be in place:

* Starting Sunday at 5 p.m., Spadina Crescent from Second Avenue to Broadway Bridge will be closed;

* On Monday starting at 9 a.m., road closures will include the Traffic Bridge, Third Avenue from 19th Street to the Traffic Bridge, and Victoria Avenue from the Traffic Bridge to 11th Street;

* Also on Monday, starting at 7 a.m., closures will include the Broadway Bridge, Broadway Avenue from the Broadway Bridge to 12th Street, and Fourth Avenue South from 20th Street to the Broadway Bridge.

Roadways are expected to reopen by Tuesday at 6 a.m., the city said.

In addition to the main fireworks show, festivities are being held at different venues throughout the city.

Events begin at Rotary Park at noon, Nasser Plaza at 1 p.m. and River Landing’s amphitheatre stage at 1 p.m.
