The Oilers are out and Edmonton is paying up

Following a bet made with Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan, Edmonton’s Mayor Amarjeet Sohi will have to wear a Florida Panthers jersey in the coming days

While the Stanley Cup Finals are concluded and the Oilers are on the way home, there are still debts to be paid and wagers to be honoured — just as soon as they can find a Florida Panthers jersey.

A sweater to bear

Following a bet made with Sunrise Mayor Michael J. Ryan, Edmonton’s Mayor Amarjeet Sohi will have to wear a Florida Panthers jersey in the coming days.

The mayor’s office said that Sohi intends to honour the bet once they get their hands on a Panthers jersey for him to wear.

Sohi has proven he’s a good sport, honouring previous bets made during losses by the Oilers to the Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights during the last two playoffs.

Premier Danielle Smith made a bet of her own against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Following Monday’s loss, it looks like the Florida governor will be receiving some Alberta whisky in the mail.

Grace in defeat

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) reported a relatively tame night Monday compared to previous Stanley Cup events.

For the most part, Edmonton fans represented their team and city with class throughout the playoffs,” said EPS communications adviser Scott Pattison in an email.

Of the 33,000 fans packed into the Ice District for Monday’s game, filling the arena and both viewing areas, Pattison said the incident numbers were “rather negligible.”

EPS made five arrests for intoxication in the Ice District and reported three overdoses, two of whom walked away after refusing further treatment. Pattison said EPS made just one criminal arrest for mischief. The numbers were mild considering the size of the crowd and also when compared to 2006, when police arrested more than 50 people on Whyte Avenue when the Oilers lost in overtime to the Carolina Hurricanes.

A victor without their spoils

The jackpot for Monday’s game reached an impressive $21,688,770, which would give the lucky winner $10,844,385. So, if anyone’s 50/50 numbers began with A-192, you might want to check your tickets.

Of the five prizes up for grabs from Monday’s game, only one has been claimed so far.

Also still to be drawn is the Playoff Bonus 50/50 Jackpot, which has $7,843,580 still up for grabs. The bonus numbers will be drawn on Wednesday at 11:59 a.m.
