Police searched home of brothers accused of Copperfield murder four days after killing, court told

‘We were looking for a canister of bear spray, a black Nike sneaker (and) a knife or an edged weapon’

When police searched the southeast Calgary home of two brothers charged with murdering a city teen, they found a black sneaker stuffed into the garbage under the kitchen sink, court heard Tuesday.

But officers conducting the search also found that shoe’s match in the garage of the Copperfield residence, eliminating it as a potential crucial piece of evidence.

Forensic crime scenes unit Const. Paulina Cozicar testified her team was looking for a single shoe as part of the search warrant they obtained on the home where the brothers lived with their parents.

Because one of the accused is a youth, neither brother can be identified in connection with the fatal stabbing of Danillo Canales Glenn last Sept. 5.

The youth, 16 at the time, is on trial for second-degree murder in the killing of Canales Glenn, 18.

Officers conducted a search of the home four days after the deadly assault looking for items linked to the crime, Cozicar said.

“We were looking for a canister of bear spray, a black Nike sneaker (and) a knife or an edged weapon,” Cozicar told Crown prosecutor Jo-Ann Munn Gafuik, of some of the items listed on the search warrant.

The prosecutor pointed to a photo taken by Cozicar’s partner, Const. Craig Adolph, of a black running shoe found at the residence.

“It’s the right foot of a Nike sneaker size 9 1/2 U.S.,” she testified.

“It was found in the garbage underneath the sink in the kitchen.”

But Cozicar said they also found a left sneaker in the garage and compared it to the shoe found in the garbage.

“They appear to be a matching set?” Munn Gafuik asked.

“They appear to be, yes,” Cozicar said.

Danillo Glenn was fatally stabbed after he and his friends were pepper sprayed while shooting baskets at a nearby outdoor arena on a late summer evening.

Witnesses testified two males wearing hoodies approached after Canales Glenn asked them what they were looking at, and attacked without saying a word.

Following the killing, investigators found a black Nike runner in the middle of the rink’s cement pad, with the accused youth’s DNA on it.

CCTV video also captured a male identified by a witness as the accused killer, riding a bike away from the scene wearing only one shoe.

Police did find a pair of grey jeans with manufacturer tears on the front of both legs.

A still photo of the individual riding the bicycle shows him wearing a similar pair of pants, Cozicar said.

The trial is expected to conclude this week.

A trial date in adult court for the elder brother has not yet been set.
