Sask. government puts up $100M loan for proposed Weyburn wind power project

The Seven Stars Energy Project is expected to produce 200 megawatts of power

The Government of Saskatchewan is putting up a $100 million loan toward a wind power project near Weyburn.

This will be a joint project with Enbridge Inc. and Six Nations Energy Development, according to a news release from the government issued Monday.

“The Seven Stars Energy Project is a collaboration between Enbridge and Cowessess, George Gordon, Kahkewistahaw, Pasqua and White Bear First Nations as well as Métis Nation-Saskatchewan,” read the province’s written statement. The six Indigenous partners will receive a $100 million loan guarantee through the Saskatchewan Indigenous Investment Finance Corp. (SIIFC).

The project will be built, developed and run by an indirect Enbridge subsidiary but the six First Nations will be able to acquire “at least 30 per cent equity in the project.”

Upon completion, the project should be able to produce 200 megawatts, enough to meet the annual energy needs of more than 100,000 homes.
