Goalie goodbye: Markstrom thanks Flames fans in social media post

After months of speculation about his future in the Flaming C, the 34-year-old netminder was traded Wednesday to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and hulking blue-liner Kevin Bahl.

Markstrom spent the past four seasons at the Saddledome, amassing 105 victories — good for fourth on the Flames’ all-time wins list among goaltenders — and 15 shutouts and earning a Vezina Trophy nomination during the 2021-22 campaign. His son, Clark, was born in 2023.

While Markstrom’s message was aimed at the Flames’ faithful, fans in New Jersey were cheering his photo selection. He included a shot of a lunging glove save against the New York Rangers, now his cross-river rivals.

As one person commented: “Already a good Devil posting that photo of you robbing the Rangers.”
