Dozens evacuated as blaze tears through condo building in McKenzie Towne

Forty-eight condo units were evacuated last night after a large fire in McKenzie Towne.

The Calgary Fire Department was called to the blaze at the Prestwick Villas SE condo complex at about 10 p.m. Firefighters arrived to significant smoke and flames from a corner and soon after, the entire roof on one of the buildings.

“Firefighters quickly initiated an exterior fire attack with master streams, both from the ground and from an elevated position on aerial apparatus”, the department said in a press release. “Interior attack and searches were conducted in coordination with the exterior efforts.”

Fire crews were able to put out the blaze, but the entire building suffered severe damage. No injuries were reported.

The Red Cross set up a reception centre to help the dozens of people who could not return to their homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
