Hungary have confirmed that Barnabas Varga is ‘in a stable condition and conscious’ after he suffered a serious head injury during his nation’s win over Scotland at Euro 2024.
The 29-year-old collided with Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn in the 68th minute and was immediately motionless on the turf.
Varga appeared to land awkwardly on his head and Hungary’s medical team put him in the recovery position straight away.
Hungary’s players looked visibly distressed as they helped stewards hold up blankets to shield Varga from cameras.
BBC commentator Steve Wilson said Liverpool midfielder and Hungary’s captain Dominik Szoboszlai was ‘in tears’.
Varga was stretchered off and the game continued before Hungary scored a last-gasp winner in injury time to seal a 1-0 victory to eliminate Scotland from the tournament.
However, Hungary have now confirmed that Varga is stable and conscious after he was taken to hospital for further medical treatment.
When asked about the incident, Gunn said: ‘I thought I had to come, it was a bit painful.
‘Hopefully the guy’s alright. I can’t really remember too much about that one.’
Hungary finished third in Group A and are now waiting to see if their three points will be enough to secure a place in the knockout stage as one of the four best third-placed teams.
Germany finished top of the group following their 1-1 draw with Switzerland, who go through as runners-up.
