Toula Drimonis: Quebec woos foreign workers, then scapegoats them

Despite the anti-immigrant rhetoric, the CAQ government has been cranking up its recruitment efforts for temporary help from abroad.

The premier is essentially talking from both sides of his mouth.

Before the CAQ government came into power, only two recruiting missions were held abroad between 2016 and 2018, the report shows. In sharp contrast, around 10 missions are already planned for 2024, to the tune of $1.4 million, in Brazil, Mexico, sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon and Colombia. That’s a lot of wooing for a government that at the same time complains about the very category of workers it is wooing!

Immigrants are being actively recruited and told they are welcome and needed in Quebec. Then, when they arrive, they are told (by the government that’s busy recruiting them) that they are in fact a major problem — a national emergency even!
