Roberto Baggio was taken to hospital after a violent robbery at his home during Italy’s Euro 2024 defeat to Spain on Thursday evening.
The 57-year-old was watching the game with his family at his villa in Altavilla Vicentina, a small town south-west of Vicenza, when five armed men broke in.
Baggio confronted the men and was hit in the head with the butt of a gun before he and his family locked themselves in a room.
According to Italian newspaper Corriere del Veneto, the ordeal lasted 40 minutes as the burglars ransacked Baggio’s home, stealing watches, money and jewellery.
Baggio rang the police after the robbers had left and he was then taken to a hospital in Arzignano for stitches to his head.
Baggio has been married to his wife Andreina for 34 years and has three children, Valentina, Mattia and Leonardo.
