1. We Used to Live Here

By Marcus Kliewer (Simon & Schuster)

The weirdness begins when Eve, home alone, opens the front door to a family whose dad claims her new house is his old house and he would like to show it to his family. Eve ignores her Spidey senses and reluctantly decides to let the strangers in. (Oh, oh.) First a hit short story on Reddit, We Used to Live Here has been optioned by Netflix and has Blake Lively attached to play the lead.

3. Halfway Home: Thoughts from Midlife

By Christina Myers (Anansi)

Myers’s book is perfectly placed to make Gen X women feel seen. (Weird, right?) This book is part handy guide to anti-aging cosmetic company promises and perimenopause, while also acting as a consoling friend who shares in the ups-and-downs of the midlife roller-coaster ride. The Surrey writer’s collection of essays takes us through first bras, first periods and first signs of menopause, with a healthy dose of cheek and understanding about our collective bewilderment toward aging and the craziness of the world we are currently navigating. You will laugh out loud, maybe shed a tear and most certainly will nod your head in agreement. You’ll also feel OK about putting on that swimsuit.

4. The Leap Year Gene

By Shelly Wood (HarperCollins — available Aug. 6)

From the Kelowna author behind the hit novel The Quintland Sisters, comes this wide-ranging historical tale of the McKinley family. Like any good literary family, the McKinleys have one heck of a secret, in this case, a girl who ages one year for every four years. This genetic situation keeps the family on the move as they fight to avoid unwanted interest from eugenic-obsessed suffragettes, Nazis, doctors with agendas and, of course, greedy Big Pharma.

5. The Plus One

By S.C. Lalli (Harper Avenue — available Aug. 13)

Described as “The White Lotus meets The Guest List,” this new offering from the bestselling Vancouver author of Are You Sara? is soooo beach-ready. Lalli’s latest story is about a posh luxury resort wedding between the children of powerful and very wealthy Indian-American families. But not everyone is there with their arms full of good wishes. Enter an outsider with an agenda. Oh yeah, and the betrothed couple are found dead on the morning of the nuptials. Who would do such a thing on such a festive day? That outsider with an agenda has some ideas.
