Young witnesses describe deadly attack on city basketball court that left teenager dead

“The one who got stabbed, he said ‘bro, stop,’ and that’s all I heard”

As he was being pepper-sprayed and fatally stabbed, Calgary teen Danillo Canales Glenn cried out “stop, bro,” his accused killer’s murder trial heard Thursday.

One of a group of young children playing in the area at the time gave a statement to Calgary police detectives the day after Canales Glenn’s Sept. 5 homicide.

The 10-year-old, who can’t be identified under a provision of the Youth Criminal Justice Act which prohibits naming witnesses who have not reached the age of majority, was playing soccer on the hockey rink pad where the victim and his friends were shooting baskets.

The young boy said he saw two males, one Black, the other white, jump the boards to the rink area and attack the victim.

“They just hopped over,” the witness said in his police statement, played in court and later adopted as true by the boy.

“They just ran and jumped over and started spraying him,” he said.

The witness said both assailants had cans of some type of spray and one was brandishing a knife.

“The one guy got stabbed and then they sprayed him again and (ran).”

He said the assailant with the knife was dressed all in black, including a pair of black sneakers.

“He ran, sprayed (the victim), then punched him on the ground and they stabbed him right there,” he said, pointing to his chest.

“The heart,” he added.

But under cross-examination by defence lawyer Alain Hepner he admitted changing his story in a police interview several weeks ago, saying the victim was stabbed in the mid-torso.

A youth, who can’t be named because he was 16 years old at the time, is charged with second-degree murder in Canales Glenn’s death.

His older brother, who also can’t be named to protect the accused’s identity, is facing the same charge in adult court.

The 10-year-old witness said the attacker wearing the black footwear was Black, while the other assailant was white.

In her opening address Tuesday, Crown prosecutor Vicki Faulker said a crucial piece of evidence is a black Nike sneaker left behind by one of the assailants which contained the accused’s DNA on three locations.

The young witness told police the attacker armed only with a spray can was wearing grey shoes.

He said neither attacker said anything before Canales Glenn was stabbed in the chest.

“The one who got stabbed, he said ‘bro, stop,’ and that’s all I heard,” he told police.

Meanwhile another young witness who can’t be named said she, too saw an assailant dressed all in black pull out a knife.

The 14-year-old told police she ran from the park area when she saw the weapon.
