Tesla owners file class-action alleging repair, parts monopoly

U.S. district judge clears owners to proceed with lawsuit, which claims automaker is violating anti-trust laws with policies

  • A U.S. judge has cleared a group of Tesla owners to take legal action against the automaker
  • At issue are the owners’ accusations that Tesla is monopolizing its cars’ parts and repairs
  • Curiously, the judge that permitted this class-action to proceed struck down a similar suit before

However, the crux of this courtroom action is the argument that Tesla has been monopolizing the markets for repairs and spare parts, an assertion that’s been made for some time now by folks who have come up hard against a wall when trying to get their Tesla repaired in a timely manner.

On Monday, Judge Thompson ruled that owners may attempt to prove Tesla coerced them into paying high prices and suffering long waits to have their vehicles fixed, all under the fear of losing warranty coverage through some sort of voiding principle. In fact, rumour has it that top-dog Elon Musk has an oversized red rubber stamp he uses to bring the hammer down on misbehaving Tesla owners.

Back at the courthouse, owners have claimed that Tesla’s alleged coercion is a violation of the federal Sherman antitrust law and California antitrust law. We’ll see where this class-action goes.
