Montreal weather: Severe thunderstorm watch stacked on top of heat warning

The storms are expected to arrive in the afternoon.

Sweltering Montrealers met Environment Canada’s severe thunderstorm watch with mixed emotions: a break from the heat is welcome, but no one is in the mood for damaging winds or flash flooding.

The watch was issued Thursday morning and is also in effect for Laval, Longueuil, Châteauguay and the Eastern Townships. Farther afield, the Richelieu Valley—St-Hyacinthe region is also under a severe thunderstorm watch.

The storms are expected to arrive in the afternoon.

Expect a high of 32 C in Montreal Thursday, with a humidex of 41 and UV index of 9, or very high. At night, a low of 20 C.

The heat wave that has been plaguing Montrealers all week could break Friday, when temperatures are expected to rise only to 27 C. The long weekend is expected to be cooler.

A hot air mass from the southern United States has made its way up to Quebec, Ontario and the Atlantic provinces, resulting in daily highs between 30 and 35 degrees and humidex values hovering around 40 in Montreal on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.
