Wranglers sweep Roadrunners in first round of AHL playoffs

There will be playoff hockey at the Saddledome this spring.

The AHL’s Calgary Wranglers will continue their Calder Cup quest after completing a sweep Friday of their best-of-three opening-round series against the Tucson Roadrunners.

The Flames’ farm-clubbers won two in a row in enemy territory, advancing with a 4-3 victory in Game 2 in Tucson.

Sam Morton, Riley Damiani, Ilya Solovyov and William Stromgren did the lamp-lighting for the Wranglers in Friday’s series-clincher, while Adam Klapka collected a pair of assists and rising-star netminder Dustin Wolf made 40 stops in Calgary’s crease.

Wolf was superb in an upset of the higher-seeded Roadrunners, posting a .966 save percentage.

Next up for the Wranglers is a best-of-five showdown against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the Pacific Division semifinals. The Wranglers will host Games 1-2 at the Saddledome, set for next Friday (7 p.m.) and Sunday (4 p.m.), and the Firebirds will be at home for Games 3-5.
