The White House is expected to name a successor to Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige before Congress recesses Friday, according to international trade sources. But White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said that “no final decision” had been made. Leading an unconfirmed list of candidates is Joe M. Rodgers, who is ambassador to France. Baldrige died in a horse riding accident July 25. Other candidates include former North Carolina Sen. James T. Broyhill, U.S. Trade Representative Clayton K. Yeutter and acting Secretary of Commerce Clarence J. Brown Jr.
