Caitlin Clark moves to No. 2 on all-time NCAA scoring list as fans waited around block to get in

Caitlin Clark continued to show why she’s one of the greatest women’s basketball players on the planet on Wednesday night as the Iowa star moved into second on the NCAA women’s basketball’s career scoring list.

A layup against Northwestern with 4:58 left on the clock in the second quarter moved Clark to 3,403 points for her career and put her past Ohio State’s Kelsey Mitchell on the all-time list in the Hawkeyes’ 110-74 win

The basket was also Clark’s 14th point of the game at that point and occurred after she had already jumped to third earlier in the contest off a 3-pointer with 2:04 left in the first quarter.

She finished the night with a game-high 35 points on 11 of 22 shooting with 10 assists.

“You don’t really think about it too much,” Clark said of the record after the game in an interview with Peacock. “You just come out every single night and play your game and have fun. This is kind of what comes with it. Like I said, I’m just grateful to be able to do it with these girls. I love them to death. These coaches, they put me in positions to be successful and I’ve had a lot of good teammates in my time here. I can’t do it without all them. I can’t do it without coach [Lisa Bluder]  letting me have the keys to the offense.

” It’s cool to be in the same vicinity as some of those names. A lot of people I grew up idolizing and looking up to. Definitely special for me.”

Clark trails only Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum for the women’s Division I college basketball all-time scoring record (3,527 points).

Clark, who is one of women’s basketball’s biggest names, also set a new Big Ten scoring record by surpassing Mitchell.

Wednesday night’s contest at Northwestern was a hot ticket as Clark and the Hawkeyes made their way to Evanston, Illinois.

Fans had wrapped around a sold-out Welsh-Ryan Arena two whole hours before tip-off waiting to get in, according to a video from the Chicago Tribune.

“This was one that was definitely circled on my calendar, just because I know the amount of Iowa fans in the Chicago area,” Clark said after the game, per the Associated Press. “So I was super excited to come here. I love this gym.”

Those looking to get into the game started lining up as early as 10 a.m. CT, including a young girl who brought a sign that read: “Go Caitlin. I’m your #1 fan,” per The Athletic.

Inside the arena, Clark was greeted by an adoring fanbase that crowded the tunnel that she and her Iowa teammates were coming out of.

A set of fans, according to the Tribune, even came with a sign that they were able to hold up when she reached third all-time on the list and then could be changed to celebrate her moving to second all-time on the scoring list.
