Horse racing at the 1953 Saskatoon Exhibition

On this day in 1953, Salisbury Juvenile Stakes horse racing at the Ex started off strong with a victory by overlooked underdog Lynn’s Boy.

From the StarPhoenix archives:

Overlooked in the betting when the second largest crowd of the week made the Whittier Park Stock Farm’s Weyburn a 7-10 favorite, Lynn’s Boy returned $18.40 on $2 straight tickets. Norm Archer’s Napinka set the early pace with Lynn’s Boy closest in pursuit. The winner took command coming out of the backstretch and won with plenty in reserve. Weyburn ran over tiring horses to be second after being far back in the early running. J.S. Thomson’s Gladys T was third.

The winner was decorated with a floral horseshoe by Mrs. F.G. Salisbury and the stable received the Salisbury silver trophy. J.A. Charlesworth, Edmonton, won the race in 1952 with Virginia Fair. Virginia Reed, his entry this year, was fifth.

The first race was more or less a family affair with Ted H, ridden by Lavigne, leading from start to finish and Taps coming to take the place from the favored Andy’s Gypsy. Ted H is owned by A.L. and R.G. Mathes while R.W. Mathes, another member of the Rimbey, Alta., family, owns Taps. The winner was second choice in the betting.
