The twin of the former Massachusetts cop accused of murdering Sandra Birchmore slept with her days before her death – knowing she was pregnant with his brother’s baby, according to court documents.
Text messages between William Farwell, 38, and the 22-year-old Birchmore suggest the pair had sex in the parking lot of her Canton apartment building Jan. 10, 2021 – just 22 days before she is believed to have been murdered by his sibling Feb. 1, court papers show.
The alleged sexual encounter occurred about a month after Farwell learned that Birchmore was pregnant with his twin Matthew Farwell’s baby, which he told investigators he’d learned of “sometime in December 2020,” according to a police-decertification order obtained by Boston Magazine.
The order, signed by Matthew Farwell on Sept. 6, permanently stripped him of ever serving as a police officer in Massachusetts again.
Birchmore was found strangled to death in her apartment Feb. 4, 2021. Her death was initially ruled a suicide, but three years later, in August, former Stoughton Police Officer Matthew Farwell was charged with murdering her and staging the scene to make it appear as if she’d killed herself.
The two had allegedly had a years-long sexual relationship which started when Birchmore was an underage teen serving in the police department’s youth law-enforcement program, which she joined when she was just 13 years old.
Both Farwell twins were serving as counselors in the program when Birchmore joined, but only Matthew has been charged of having sex with her while she was underage.
Still, William — along with youth-program Director Robert Devine — was accused of molesting Birchmore in a wrongful-death suit filed by her family.
All three officers resigned from the Stoughton Police Department in 2022 and have denied the accusations against them.
Neither William nor Devine have been charged with any crimes.
William’s decertification order also said that he misled investigators about the nature of his relationship with Birchmore — with evidence later indicating the two had a sexual relationship for two years beginning when she was 20.
The order claimed he and Birchmore exchanged sexually explicit messages and that William had searched their names in a criminal information databases numerous times beginning in 2017.
Birchmore had become pregnant just months before her death and believed it was Matthew Farwell’s child – which he also denied, though text messages recovered by investigators indicate the two had been discussing trying to have a kid.
Matthew Farwell was caught on camera visiting Birchmore’s apartment before her death. After his visit, she was not seen coming or going from the home until her body was discovered inside three days later.
