Allen Lazard strong start to Jets’ training camp continues

Observations from the Jets training camp practice on Saturday.

Lazard revival

The training camp revival of Allen Lazard continued.

His connection with Aaron Rodgers, which dates back to their time as Packers, has been on display throughout the opening four sessions, and it continued Saturday in the first 11-on-11 period — when Lazard, with Rodgers scrambling, veered toward the sideline and tapped both feet inbounds while collecting the ball.

He caught two of Rodgers’ four completions in the seven-on-seven session that followed, too.

Dropsies

Malik Taylor, who impressed Friday during training camp and is competing for a roster spot as a wideout, had a tough drop during a seven-on-seven period.

Caught my eye

Tempers flared during the fourth training camp session, with a sizable scrum — that included offensive lineman John Simpson and pass rusher Jermaine Johnson — breaking out during an 11-on-11 session.

It didn’t take long for players to get separated and for normalcy to return.

“That’s gonna happen in camp,” right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker said. “It’s almost like if that doesn’t happen in camp … you’re not really a passionate team. Just a little something something.”

Rodgers report

There were times when Rodgers and the offense clicked again, and there were other times when they struggled.

During one 11-on-11 period, Rodgers went just 1-for-4, with one throw sailing over Garrett Wilson’s head in the end zone.

He started the day 2-for-2 in the first team period and was crisp in a seven-on-seven period, too.

Injury report

CB Brandin Echols has what Robert Saleh described as a rib contusion and will be re-evaluated Monday.

WR Xavier Gipson (lower-body extremity injury) and OL Jake Hanson didn’t practice again.

Vera-Tucker participated in a portion of team drills and will see his rep count increase as training camp progresses.
